10 Tips When Buying Mobile Phone Insurance

With the cost of our phones rising each year, along with the cost of repairs, it’s only natural that many of us are taking the time to consider the available protections available. Phone cases have become the norm, as have screen protectors but, of course, the most long-term solution has been comprehensive mobile insurance plans.

But how can we decide what makes a quality insurance policy? Well, luckily we have 10 tips to make the decision all the more simple.

  1. Assess the claim conditions

Obviously an insurance policy will differ from policy to policy as well as from provider to provider. However, an important element to immediately identify for all options is what the terms and conditions surrounding claims and repairs – because some policies will only allow for a specified number.

In an ideal world, every provider would offer unlimited claims and repairs for any given insurance policy. However, this isn’t the case. But fortunately, that doesn’t mean you can’t find a policy that does promise unlimited protection for your device – you’ll just need to make it a filtered parameter for your search!

  1. Opt for a provider with a responsive service team

Damaging your phone – whether it’s a smashed screen, water damage or a mechanical fault – is extremely frustrating which is why you won’t want to deal with an unresponsive staffing team. So, when looking for an insurance policy, it’s a good idea to check that the provider has a 24-hour in-house customer service team and avoid any delays.

  1. Decide if theft cover is for you

Now you might feel like you’ll never experience a theft. You may be too careful of a person or have minimised the risk by adopting certain behaviours – however, that isn’t something that we can always control and therefore you may want an insurance policy that prepares and protects you from the eventuality.

As a result, if you suffer from a theft, you’ll receive a replacement device and only incur the excess fee charges rather than have to splash out for a brand new device.

  1. Foresee airtime abuse

Whilst on the subject of theft, it’s also important to consider the charges that could arise following the incident. Should the person in question use your phone to make calls or send messages, you could find yourself up against some airtime fees. In which case, you’ll be wishing you’d chosen an insurance policy that covers airtime abuse.

  1. Prepare for slippery situations

Now, many of our devices have taken a dip in the bathtub or been left in the rain too long previously, so it’s safe to say that searching for an insurance policy that covers water damage should be on all of our radars!

  1. Smash, shatter, crack

Dropping your phone can lead to a specific kind of panic – especially if your phone lands face down and you’re unsure if any damage has occurred. This is exactly why ensuring that your policy will repair any screen damage for an agreed excess fee should be a priority when searching for a new insurance plan. Because it really will make those moments less painful.

  1. Is accidental damage covered?

You’ll probably understand that preparing for accidental damage is a key theme and consideration when it comes to finding that perfect insurance plan, but we’re going to reiterate it one more time just to be sure.

Whether it’s a phone left on the bus or an accidental drop that causes mechanical failure, make sure your insurance policy is prepped for it and offers comprehensive cover. If not, you could end up facing some hefty repair or replacement costs – especially if you’re known to be a bit accident prone.

  1. Heading abroad? Then you’ll need worldwide cover!

Again, this one might go without saying but make sure your insurance policy is valid for all locations.

Of course, if you don’t tend to travel this might not be a core consideration for you, but as many of us do enjoy venturing abroad, worldwide cover is something that each individual should look for in a policy’s terms and conditions.

  1. Find a flexible contract

If you’re looking to protect your phone but aren’t sure what length of contract you need, then finding a fully flexible provider is a must. This means that rather than commit to a 12 or 18-month insurance plan, you’ll pay for your protection on a month by month basis – meaning you’ll have the control to cancel the plan should you get a new phone!

  1. Consider additional insurance needs

Whilst your mobile might be your prime concern, you should also consider whether any loved or expensive accessories are covered also. For some providers, this can be a simple add-on to the primary insurance policy – keeping everything simple and safe.

Finding an insurance plan that exactly meets your requirements is no easy task, but with these tips on your side, your decision should be that little bit easier!
